The forecast was terrible. There’s really no other way to put it. It was 90% change of thunderstorms all day long and, indeed, on the drive there that morning, my windshield wipers were on the highest speed as everyone on the interstate was struggling to see through the downpour. But then! Something miraculous happened. It remained overcast, but the rain just stopped. Nothing.

We photographed the details. Marisa got into her gown. Her and Josh saw each other during their first look. And still…no rain. Armed with a few umbrellas, I made the call to head outside and get as many photos as we could before the rain started again. And for the next hour, we just kept making the call as we went (literally, me texting Marisa’s personal attendant–one of my past brides!–telling bridal party and family to meet us a few blocks away) and I never ended up opening those umbrellas! It’s been the rainiest October I’ve seen, but I felt so much gratitude on this day that God held back the rain for us exactly when we needed it.

Classic_Black_White_Wedding_EmilyCrall_Photo_0323.jpg

Truly, aside from how we were all astonished at the sudden disappearance of rain, it was the most joyous day for Marisa & Josh! These two have been together for years. Having known each other since they were my son’s age in preschool, they’ve quite literally seen each other through the most awkward phases of growing up. Well, I assume they were like most people who have awkward teenage years, but then again, these two are class acts so they may have managed to avoid that. I had photographed Josh’s cousin’s wedding several years ago so it was really fun to see his side of the family again and to meet Marisa’s family. I always find it such a wonderful treat to meet the parents who have raised these individuals and and friends and siblings who have known them since their birth or high school or college or whatever formative years they entered their lives. I get to know the couple first and then when I meet their support system, I finally get the whole picture of just why these two are so wonderful and sweet and kind.

Marisa and Josh, thank you for inviting me into your wedding day! Not only was it beautiful and fun, but you were so gracious and relaxed and easy to work with! I hope you will always treasure these memories.Classic_Black_White_Wedding_EmilyCrall_Photo_0324.jpg

I don’t know that I need to even mention this, but Marisa has the best style.

Marisa and Josh chose a first look and it was so sweet to witness. Josh just kept saying, “You look absolutely amazing!” I’m sure Marisa felt like a princess that day and Josh was every bit in awe of how lucky he was/is.

Remember this guy? He made an appearance again on their wedding day in his little suit and, oh my gosh, how adorable!!! He was so well-behaved too!
Classic_Black_White_Wedding_EmilyCrall_Photo_0381.jpg

In trying to think of a location downtown to take photos of a large bridal party, I was stumped. All the rain had made our original location too wet and our rain backup was inside and not ideal. So when I stumbled across this huge black wall in an alley while we were walking, I felt like I hit the jackpot!!

A few days after their wedding, Josh’s grandfather passed away. I stumbled across this image and immediately sent it over to Josh because it just felt so special. The pride on his grandfather’s face is something I hope Josh will always treasure.

This wedding was nearly 100% designed by the Unique Events team. Everything from florals to custom bar to chargers and linens and flatware to uplighting and music and a light-up dance floor: it was complete magic and I think it took everyone’s breath away when they saw it!

Can we all just take a moment to ooh over this hanging floral piece? There were TWO! One over the harvest head table and one over the lounge!
Classic_Black_White_Wedding_EmilyCrall_Photo_0418.jpg

And this cake by Tip Top Cakes was a focal piece at the entrance of the ballroom. Look at the sugar work in those flowers!!! Rumor has it that this is the largest cake Adam’s ever done, but I haven’t confirmed that yet. But do the math, there are 8 tiers, the bottom one a massive 22″! (I can confirm that it was as delicious as it looks!)

FILED IN: Engaged, Photography

It was early in 2015 when they first met. They had been chatting online when he mentioned one day that was going to see a movie. She mentioned that all her friend had seen it and loved it. “I asked him to let me know what he thought of it and that’s when he asked if I wanted to come with him. With butterflies in my stomach, I accepted his invitation and he actually picked me up that day.” They went out to eat beforehand and then walked to the theater. “We had the best conversations. It wasn’t at all awkward. There was never more than a minute of silence.” After spending the evening together, she remembers sitting on her couch that night “giggling like a little school girl. That’s when I knew he was special.”

It was so much fun to photograph Gideon and Lindsay’s bond last week at the Palisades! They have a sweet, tender love that is so special to witness. If you’ve been around them, you know just how wonderful they are together.

Gideon surprised Lindsay with his proposal right before their one year anniversary. “We planned a trip to Des Moines the weekend before our anniversary to celebrate. We made reservations at a fancy Italian restaurant and before that, Gideon wanted to show me Gray’s Lake. He wouldn’t tell me where we were going and it made me so frustrated! It was freezing that night and me eyes were watering, my nose was running, and I wondered why in the heck he’d chosen that night of all nights to show me this lake. I was ruining his special plans by complaining. While we were walking, I realized he wasn’t standing next to me anymore. When I turned around, I saw him down on one knee. He asked me to marry him and I didn’t believe him! It felt so surreal! The bitter cold disappeared and all that I saw was him. Nothing else mattered. We kissed and hugged and then he looked at me and said, ‘So is that a yes?’ I then said yes a thousand times. To think I could have ruined such a beautiful night with my bad attitude.”

June 20, 2017

It’s June in Iowa and we are in the midst of wave upon unending wave of heat. In the week leading up to Liz & Zach’s wedding, we knew it was going to be really hot outside…with full sun (no clouds at all!) and no shade for the ceremony. The more concerning factor to me was the wind. While it was great to move some [hot] air around, it proved really tricky to do photos working against three major natural factors: full sun, intense heat, and gusting winds.

Thankfully, I found a shaded spot for some of Liz & Zach’s photos and we’d pause then shoot really quickly when the wind quieted down, then break when it picked back up. Also thankfully, the front porch at Zach’s grandmother’s home (where the ceremony was held) was gorgeous and large. It provided both shade and a wind block so we used that for their bridal party and family photos.

Their ceremony was held outside by the double pond with a beautiful flowered archway. Their reception was held in downtown Cedar Rapids at the DoubleTree by Hilton. Despite the heat, it was the loveliest of days and I loved seeing them surrounded not only by their best friends, but by their families and loved ones as well.

When we arrived, the ladies were getting their hair and makeup done in the kitchen, while the guys were all hanging out downstairs. I love being able to ease into the day with hellos and then photographing all of the bride’s lovely details, including this Morilee gown that Liz wore.

Liz & Zach had their first look on the porch. They wanted to try going out to the prairie for some photos so we decided to make it easiest to see each other at the house so we could all drive out together, without needing to keep them hidden. This also proved great because the wind did a number to Liz’s veil out in the prairie and a first look out there would’ve been nearly impossible. 🙂

December 27, 2016

Leading up to the day, the chances of Emily’s dream winter wonderland wedding were looking good. She was hoping for “nice weather with a light quiet snowfall right at 5:05pm.” The chances of snow were 60%, but the closer the wedding day got, the colder the temperatures crept. Saturday arrived with bitter winds, a barely double digit temperature, and, swirling, whirling snow flakes!

Summer weddings—particularly in August—are challenging in that I have to work incredibly fast while taking photos so that no one gets heat stroke. The humidity is brutal. Winter weddings provide the exact same challenge with the opposite effects; instead of heat stroke, we are fighting against frost bite. With only a 20 minute window before frost bite sets in (and a 2-minute window before miserable cold sets in), I had the choice of either working completely inside or strategically and quickly capturing some of the magic of the snow fall.

I knew Emily & Derek would be game since the day we took their engagement photos last winter was nearly as cold as their wedding day and not even as pretty (i.e. no falling snow). So with safety as our first priority, we took about 5 minutes of quick photos outside the hotel before heating back up inside and then gathering the bridal party for photos on top of a nearby parking garage. (Yes, a parking garage! It was absolutely perfect!) Thankfully, the DoubleTree connects to a parking garage via a skywalk. The parking garage also has indoor stairs & elevators so we could gather inside while I took the bridesmaids out, then back in, the groomsmen out, then back in, the whole bridal party out and back in. The key to photographing in either extreme cold or extreme heat is to direct efficiently and shoot quickly. Working with a great wedding party makes it all so much easier and I have to give so much love to Emily & Derek’s group of friends for braving it all for me and, ultimately, for them. The memories they all created together are going to be more special as time goes on.

Emily & Derek, your dream winter wonderland wedding was perfect. I’m so excited to show these images to you and how they give you the best memories of the most magical day.

Elmcrest_Golf_Engagement_EmilyCrall_Photo_0164.jpgThey’ve been together for a long time–since they were young highschoolers–and if you’ve spent any amount of time with them, it’s easy to pick up on their deep level of friendship and love for each other. They first spotted each other when she was a freshman, he a sophomore. “I was quite smitten with him because he was a cute, older boy,” she said.

It happened to be on Valentine’s Day when he first asked her out. One of Carolyn’s friends invited her boyfriend, Carolyn, and Marc over after a basketball game on a Friday evening. “It’s hard to remember, but I’m fairly certain Marc and I had never hung out or even talked much before this night. The house had a mini movie theater downstairs and we were hanging out when Marc asked me to go upstairs with him. He grabbed a few things from behind a chair and asked me to be his girlfriend by giving me a rose and a burned CD of Tim McGraw’s greatest hits. He actually made his own cover with the songs handwritten and the cover colored with blue crayon because that’s my favorite color.” Her parents came later to pick them up in their minivan (“Ah…young love,” she said) and Marc added, “That’s as close to a ‘date’ as we could have at that age.”

I absolutely adore these two. We spent the evening at Elmcrest Golf Course for their engagement session and we spent a considerable amount of the session laughing, which just goes to show how easy is it to make friends with them. I’m so thrilled to be part of their wedding in the spring and I already am itching to get them back in front of my camera because, duh, look at them and also, I can’t wait to hang out with them again.
Elmcrest_Golf_Engagement_EmilyCrall_Photo_0165.jpg Elmcrest_Golf_Engagement_EmilyCrall_Photo_0166.jpgWhen I asked how he proposed, Marc filled me in. “This part was stressful, but I nailed it. After 13 years of dating, I had to do this right and I wanted to maintain some element of surprise…but she didn’t make it easy. She told me she didn’t want me to propose on or near a holiday or in front of anyone. She also has a soy allergy, so restaurants/trips are pretty much ruled out. I got the ring in November of 2015, just in time for crappy weather and the holiday season. On top of that, we had only been back in Iowa for a few months so we didn’t have any ‘special’ places that weren’t associated with high school.

“So, I let the holiday season pass. The first week of January I contacted one of her friends at work and had her plan ‘to get drinks’ with Carolyn on Friday night. We checked out a couple wedding venues in the area already and we both really liked the Palmer House Stable in Solon, but it was going to be too small for our party. So I set up the proposal there. Carolyn’s friend picked her up that night to get drinks at the Solon brewery down the road from the stable. They pulled up to the stable and I was waiting for her.”

Carolyn added in a few details from her perspective: “My friend, Sarah, picked me up and we went to get pedicures before heading to Solon. I told her I wanted to show her Palmer House Stable because it was right down the road from Big Grove Brewery. As we passed it, she pulled over and stopped and I was like, ‘Okay, that’s weird. She really wants to see this place.’ There was a man standing on the corner right in front of us, but I didn’t pay attention to him at all. Side note: I lived in NYC for 3 years and in the time learned to master blocking random people from view, so honestly, had no clue who the man was. Until…my friend said, ‘Carolyn…look!’ And it was Marc. Dressed in a suit. Standing outside on one of the coldest nights of the winter. He opened the door and I stepped out, completed shocked. Sarah was like, ‘Byeeeeee’ and took off.”

“I took her inside…had ‘our songs’ playing, candles lit, and the champagne on ice,” Marc said. “We danced to a few songs and I popped the question on a knee. Then we went downstairs and I had a very nice candle lit dinner catered and served by The Bread Garden…soy free of course. I had our parents join us for dinner because family is very important to both of us, and we wouldn’t have made it that far without their love and support. I’m very proud of this night as you can tell. Gold star for Marc.”
Elmcrest_Golf_Engagement_EmilyCrall_Photo_0167.jpg Elmcrest_Golf_Engagement_EmilyCrall_Photo_0168.jpg“Since we started dating when we were so young, I don’t know that there was one moment when I knew he was the one. More likely, there were a whole bunch of small moments that happened that led me to believe we would spend the rest of our lives together. I think a huge part of our relationship has been growing up together. We started out as 14 & 15 year olds who were just starting high school. … Each time our relationship overcame a challenging situation (college, traveling abroad, living in separate places), we became more solid and it was clear we were meant to be together. We have transitioned through one life phase to the next over the past 13 years. That’s how I know we’ll make it through the rest of our life phases together.”

I’m looking forward to marrying my high school sweetheart surrounded by our family and friends, old and new.”

“I’m looking forward to sealing the deal…[like] putting a stamp on everything we’ve been through together,” Marc said. “I will be celebrating our past and present relationship as much as our future together. I think we’ll both be thinking, ‘I knew we could do this.'”

Hotel Kirkwood Wedding_Emily Crall_0438.jpg

Their wedding day dawned with blue skies and fluffy, white clouds. We arrived at her parent’s home where the ladies were all relaxing throughout the house, finishing up makeup, eating lunch, and laughing. It’s my favorite scene to arrive to and the easy spirit carried throughout the rest of the day.

Rachel and Carson are two truly sweet people. Their relationship has mostly been long distance and so when Carson was in Iowa in December, I took a few hours away from my brand new baby to meet up with them for their engagement photos. Seeing them both interact at that time only prepped me for how much I was going to love working with them on their wedding day. I loved every minute! When I met the rest of their families, it made so much sense how they both ended up being such genuine, wonderful people.

With the final details being put in place at the Hotel at Kirkwood Center for their reception, the ceremony was just a few minutes from her childhood home at her family’s church. After stepping into her gown, she went to the church to meet Carson.

Rachel was the epitome of a joyful bride! Not only was she so fun to be with, but just look at her smile in these photos!!

Navy suits are so classy and the gentlemen pulled them off well. (One of Carson’s groomsmen said, “Yeah, Carson has good taste. Leave it to him to have the best looking suits around.”)

Rachel’s dog even joined us at the church for some photos! There’s a sequence of about 10 images leading up to this one that are very entertaining.

Mark from Hitting the Mark Entertainment did the uplighting, including this custom monogram, and I believe it took all of our breaths away.

I adore a good harvest table and love the way the bridal party can interact during dinner as opposed to facing the guests as if on display. Adam from Covington & Company did all the design and table decor and it was everything Rachel and her mom dreamed of.

While guests were still eating dinner, I snuck Rachel & Carson outside for some extra sunset photos. Taking photos during this time allowed for them to breathe deeply and take a bit of a break, but also provided some of my favorite images since it’s during the golden hour, thus that beautiful golden glow on their skin!

Rachel & Carson, thank you. You were so wonderful to work with and it was my pleasure to photograph you on your wedding day. I am only sad it’s all over. Xo!
