welcome to the

September 4, 2018

It was so humid the morning of their wedding, we wistfully hoped for just 5 minutes of rain just to ease up the dripping air. But it turned out that by afternoon, though still humid and hot, there was a little breeze and that, combined with the shade and me moving portraits along as quickly as possible, made it bearable.

Kaitlin and Alec are such a fun couple and it was such a joy to meet their friends and family on their wedding day! Back at their engagement session, Kaitlin and Alec had both mentioned how important their families are to them. “Alec and I both value our families a ton and love spending time at each others’ homes. As the first year of our relationship progressed, I found myself feeling like a part of his family and I saw my family taking him in as well. In particular, watching him goof around with my nieces and nephews made me heart melt. We both just settled into each other’s lives like we had been there all along.” Alec echoes this sentiment, saying that he knew she was the one when he had unsolicited approval from him mom. So to be able to meet all of these people in their lives was a treasure!

The ladies were relaxing in a large suite when we arrived. Music was playing, snacks were being consumed, hair was already perfectly in place, and makeup was being applied. It was a fun, relaxing environment to enjoy the pre-wedding moments with your best friends.

Kaitlin has the most exquisite taste and her champagne ballgown was absolutely breathtaking. The mixture of gold in her earrings, white gold in their wedding bands, sparkling heels, deep greens in the flowy bridesmaids’ dresses, blush & bright pinks in the flowers…it all pulled together for the most stunning color palette.

I was standing at the back of the church when the priest suddenly, in the middle of the service, stopped and said, “I see you have a photographer here.” He proceeded to ask me to come up to the front and stand right next to him to take this photo, to show them later what his point of view was. I’ve never in ten years had this happen, but it was such a fun–albeit awkward for me as I had no warning of this happening whatsoever–memory for them to have!

January 10, 2017

On New Year’s Eve, Emily & Nick were married in her family church in Iowa City. The irony is that Emily & Nick both grew up in in town, but never met until they were in medical school together at the University of Iowa. They now live in Minnesota for their residencies, but came back to be married in the place where it all started…and where a lot of their families live!

Their stunning classic black tie wedding was a huge celebration of not only their brand new marriage, but also of the new year and the joy of many of their old friends all making it back to the college grounds where they all met!

Emily & Nick, since in medical school, started their relationship in the books. Literally. They became study partners and their first official date was actually at a coffee shop with another couple–a double date that Emily still says he tricked her into (read about it here)–that gave way to late night drinks of the non-coffee variety.

On the morning of their wedding, the ladies prepped and relaxed in her suite at the hotel. That calm environment is my favorite thing to walk into. It starts my part of the day off on such a great note and ensures that my only job (emotionally) is to continue to carry that spirit calmness throughout the rest of the day.

Each of Emily’s bridesmaids picked out their own gown and I loved being able to use a variety of textures (the sequins!) for backgrounds in her detail shots.

This clutch was made for Emily’s sister for her wedding. It was made from the lace and detailing from their mother’s and grandmother’s wedding dresses and has each of their monograms and wedding dates now embroidered inside.

This Amsale gown was so beautiful. The fabric had the most exquisite texture, it was really soft and lightweight, and it was a ballgown style (which you know is my favorite)! Bonus: I loved the low back too!

It was a really, really cold day–it is December in Iowa after all–but we lucked out with some sunshine. There was a frigid breeze, which eventually forced the decision to move family photos inside, but we tried to use buildings to help block the wind for the rest of the photos. Winter brides are stronger women than I am.

I loved this spot to showcase some of Iowa City’s old architecture, but also as a bonus, we were able to pull some green into the photos, even though it’s terribly drab outside. God bless the evergreens.

June 14, 2016

I have absolutely loved becoming friends with Cortney & Christian over the last year. From our first meeting to their engagement session to that evening shoot, I have always said good night with a big smile on my face. They have that affect on you.

Their wedding day was bright and sunshiny, a bit warm, but with a cool breeze. Their church ceremony was downtown Iowa City at Zion Lutheran Church with their reception a close drive at the Iowa Memorial Union. They chose pale blue with “lots of sparkles” for their colors. One of the unique parts of their wedding (that I had been looking forward to for a long time) was their breakfast dinner. Christian is a fire fighter and Cortney works a regular day job so their schedules cross in the morning when he’s coming home and she’s leaving, thus their breakfast is most people’s dinner. To celebrate that, they chose to serve the most delicious breakfast buffet at their reception, including waffles, yogurt parfaits, fresh fruits, gravy & biscuits, and quiche.

We began our day at the church where the girls were meeting after hair & makeup to get dressed. Cortney’s stunning Badgley Mischka heels were as stunning as her Maggie Sottero gown.

Cortney, her bridesmaids, the flower girls, attendants, and mothers all had custom blue robes to wear before they got dressed.

Cortney & Christian chose to have a First Look before the ceremony. Our timeline the day of was rather hurried so this allowed us to maximize the time that we had for photos.

Oh, I’m just so excited to share this Iowa Memorial Union wedding with you guys! I hit it off with Skylar & James the moment I met them and I was so excited for them to finally be married!

They met at a birthday party back in their early teens. Skylar readily admits she was not attracted to him at all since her first impression was him showing off to the girls by letting them drive his Trailblazer around the block. It was his steady persistence in her over the following months that finally changed her mind. James’ brother describes him as having many layers. What Skylar first saw of James was just one of those layers, but beneath, he’s a sweet, caring, devoted person who is also determined.

Sticking to each other through high school, college, and life-after-classes, they’ve become both strong individuals and a strong couple. Last April, James asked Skylar to marry him (you can read how he proposed here) and I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know them ever since. They hold a special place in my heart because, truly, they are genuine and kind. They are the kind of people you want to be around because they make you laugh and love and care.

It had been just 3 hours after he proposed on their picnic in the park when she sent me an email. He had asked her who their photographer should be and her response was, “Emily, of course!” While I had grown up knowing him (our families were neighbors and we carpooled to school together), up to that point, I hadn’t met her. But our connection was pretty instant. Megan and I have similar style and taste and we’ve already decided that play dates will be happening in the future when we both have children. Between our emails back and forth, coffee together, and getting to know Trent & Megan as a couple, I have grown to love these two.

When I had first learned they were having a Great Gatsby themed wedding, I was thrilled because I knew that if anyone could pull off a themed wedding (especially a Gatsby one!), it would be them. While they did so much work themselves to pull it all together, they also enlisted the help of a great team of vendors as well as their family & friends. The day was stunning in every way possible and, aside from the details themselves, I was so excited to get the two of them in front of my lens again. Their connection and chemistry is absolutely amazing and it’s so beautiful to see.

They had Megan’s gown hanging up and a table with all of the accessories–jewelry, paper suite, perfume, shoes–ready to be photographed. It was a dream come true to have everything so well prepared and saved so much time as I was shooting details!
