The sound of music is not coming from my new violin. I have great excitement to expand my musicological skills, but I am realizing that it’s going to be a lot more arduous that I thought. I guess I forgot that my piano skills were honed over 9 years of experience and tears and recitals and daily training. I guess I somehow assumed that I would be able to whip out the violin like an old friend and reminisce.
The main problem does not stem from the lack of talent at this point (though that is obviously a concern), but the lack of sound from the violin. I am learning all about the many things that I have never had to deal with in piano, such as tuning, tightening, and strings. I have a determination though and hopefully it will pay off.
All in all, I am not practicing right now because The Sound of Music is on TV and I am absolutely obsessed with that movie. It was one of the movies I was allowed to watch as a little girl and it has been a favorite classic of mine ever since. I can sing every song in the movie and practically quote right along with it. I love Maria! I used to pretend that I was her. It’s only too bad that I didn’t have paisley green clothes made from curtains. On the days that I wasn’t pretending I was Maria, I was Liesl, the eldest Van Trapp daughter. I thought she was glamorous.
Here’s to the sound of music…both the hopeful one coming from my new instrument and the classic movie.
