If you’re from the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area, you understand. Who knew that over 400 blocks of downtown would be completely underwater? I wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t see it myself. Everyone and their mom is blogging about the flood so I feel very ordinary bringing it up as well, but the fact of the matter is that this is what is happening in my life right now.
For the record, my place is okay with no foreseeable flooding. My church, however, is rapidly going underwater with realistic expectations of a complete loss. A wall of sandbags was built to try to save it as well as pumps and pipes systems, but it was no use once the water kept rising. I keep checking this website for updates on it. It makes me really sad though.
In other news, the water is now seeping (or, more like, rushing) along Coralville and is currently one block away from my job so I have a 3 day weekend with it potentially turning into longer. I hope not, but there’s not much I can do to stop the rain.
I feel so bad for everyone who lost everything. I wish I could do more, but all I can do is lend a hand in the sand bagging efforts. I feel like I’m too much of a girly-girl for sand bagging, but it actually fun! It felt good to know that I was at least doing something, anything.
Water is both the worst enemy and the essential survival right now. There’s only one water supply that is still working [in CR] so no one is supposed to shower, flush the toilet, etc. The water is still on, but it’s only for drinking.
Anyway, beyond the flooding, there’s not a lot of other things to say. This was a very boring blog, but I’m so tired from sand bagging that I can’t even think. I’m going to go crash.
And maybe buy a boat too.
