Hi, I'm Emily.
Over the winter, I have been part of a volleyball league in Kalona. While this is a good 40 minute drive for me every Thursday, I have thoroughly enjoyed the games and, maybe the most important, the endorphin release that helps me keep my head above water with all of this wedding stuff. Well, I was on my way home last Thursday night, feeling great from the really intense game that we had just finished, when about 1/2 mile past my parents’ house in Kalona, suddenly, I saw a large glass eye right beside me in window. It was only a split second later that I felt the rest of the deer’s body as it slammed into my window and spun around and hit my back door. Talk about freaking a person out!
I pulled my car over to the side of the road, shaking, and called Kevin. I should’ve known that he would drop everything and immediately get in his car to come to my rescue–he takes good care of me. Still, I knew it would be a good 30 minutes before he got there so I pulled myself together and turned around to drive back to my parents’ house. I saw pieces of my side mirror all over the road, but the deer was no where to be seen. I was surprised since the impact had actually shifted my car on the road; I didn’t think the deer would be able to run off, but apparently, it was a devil deer who doesn’t die.
Using the lights at my parents’ house, I was able to see the damage to the car, aside from the side mirror being completely gone, and the funniest thing that made me laugh about the whole situation. [see photo at right] The deer had left me a prize hit-and-run patch of fur in my door handle. Kevin couldn’t resist taking this picture and, frankly, now that it’s over and done, I’m glad he did because it really cracks me up.
Of course, I’ve heard no end of it from my friends who know my history of animal run-ins (literally). I’m thankful for my car insurance and, gratefully, they have been nothing but wonderful through this whole situation! It ends up that my coverage is amazing and they will fix everything with no payment from me, which is a particularly wonderful feeling for me with a wedding coming up in 3 weeks.
My car has been through everything, including, but not limited to: 2 cats, 1 bear-sized raccoon, 1 goose/duck (I couldn’t tell), 1 bird, 1 Buick, 1 Jeep, and now 1 deer. It’s like the car with 9 lives. Unfortunately, the animals involved have not been so lucky… Here’s to cars who never die!
