Hi, I'm Emily.

It seems that between Kevin and I, our house has managed to turn into a hospital of sorts.  Since we got married three weeks ago, one or both of us have been sick.  Now that I am finally done with my horror of wisdom teeth removal (and it truly turned out to be horrific), Kevin is sick with the flu.  I called to the hospital this morning because we are slightly scared of the swine flu since we were in Mexico, but we have stayed home today and I am monitoring Kevin’s symptoms.  I am hoping that a) I do not want to get sick again–I cannot miss any more work and b) that Kevin has just the basic 24-hour flu and we don’t need to make a trip to the hospital anytime soon.

I haven’t posted much about our honeymoon.  We had a really great time in Mexico, but I got tired of the sandy, sunblock-oily clothes by the time we left and I was so excited to come home and do laundry.  We left for Mexico on the Sunday after our Friday wedding and I was practically bouncing out of my lap belt in the plane when I spotted the white beaches and crystal blue water.

Our resort made check-in really easy for us by having a shuttle waiting with clearly marked drivers (teal shirt, white tie, white pants).  We were surprised when we got to our room however and there were two small beds waiting for us.  After contacting the front desk and being assured that we could get switched to another room “tomorrow”, we ended up being there for 4 days before getting moved to a room with a king size bed.

The beach was lovely, but Kevin & I lathered up in sunblock spf 70.  That didn’t work and we still got burned the first day so the rest of the week, we stayed under the shade.  They had little shade huts to lay under though so we spent a lot of time just listening to the waves and drinking Miami Vice.

At night, the resort had a lot of activities going on, unfortunately, either from sheer wedding exhaustion or heat exhaustion, Kevin & I both went to sleep early and rarely made it down to the dancing/party activities going on by the pools.  One night, we stayed up late (9:30, hah!) and went to an aerobics show of sorts with some crazy stunts and fire-blazing types of shennanigans.  It was pretty fun!  Kevin & I both agreed that all of the performers would kick our butts in the Tree Pose on our Wii Fit.

On Wednesday, we took a little trip down the coast to go snorkeling and parasailing.  The snorkeling part was Kevin’s idea of a great time; the parasailing was mine.  I am really scared of being underwater.  I can only attest this to being a small child and jumping into the public pool once only to come up and get stuck underneath a large woman who was floating on top.  I remember scrambling trying to get around her to get up for air, but she seemed to take up the entire pool!  Ever since then, I’ve been scared of being underwater.  Kevin, on the other hand, is practically a fish and has no problem with eyes/nose protection.  In the end of the day, I really did enjoy the snorkeling expedition–it was so cool to see all of the water life below the surface!–however, I put my snorkeling mask on so tight that I had an indentation in my forehead for 5 days.

Parasailing was the opposite as it saw me flapping my arms around like a wanna-be bird with Kevin holding on to the harness.  We could see so far from up there and it felt like we were floating.  My dreams of going to Space Camp were somewhat satisfied with my weightless parasailing experience.

On Friday, we took a day trip to Chichen Itza.  On our way there, we stopped at Ikil, which is a beautiful natural cenote.  We were able to jump in and swim around.  The jump was about 45 feet, which is honestly much higher from the top!  The fall was also much longer than either of us expected.  We both jumped in twice, but the second time I lost the grip on plugging my nose and I inhaled a bunch of water, which brought me to the surface sputtering and gasping for air.  It was not the best experience of my day…  I also lost both of my earrings in that cenote.  Dang it.

At Chichen Itza, we had a great tour though it was blazing, blazing hot that day. We craved anything from ice cubes to ice cream to cold showers to Antarctica. Our guide was very knowledgable about Chichen Itza and it was SO cool! He also was very considerate and tried to find shade for us during most of the tour.  The architectural design of the place was unreal; I suppose that is why it is one of the seven wonders of the world.

We packed up our stuff on Saturday morning and headed to the airport.  Thus was the end of our honeymoon.  That week we both went back to work briefly before I headed in for surgery and that pretty much brings you up to date on how it’s been since then.  Our couch has become a sick bed and the sheets have been migrating from the bed to the washer/drier and back again.  We will get better one of these days and it will be just in time for the spring weather and outdoor activities!  Hurray!

For now, I’m back to being Kevin’s personal nurse…

I did not know about the pool lady before. Your fear is well-deserved.

Oh Emily, I was laughing out loud as I read your story about being stuck below some large lady in the pool–hilarious! Anyways, hope that Kevin gets over the flu quickly, and that you can enjoy married life without having any more sickness!
