I have always wanted to try out my hand at grilling more than just meat. Today seemed like a great day for that. So I grilled a cake.
It was an apple cake that is actually supposed to be grilled, but that didn’t stop us up with a round of questions about how to control the temperature. It kind of took me back to Cindy Fath’s kitchen in Uzbekistan where we had to constantly adjust the knobs on the oven because there was no such thing as a temperature control. If it said, “Bake at 375,” we just baked at somewhere between 325 and 425…depending where we could get the flame to stay. Anyway…this was far less exasperating, but just as adventurous. The cake was burnt on the bottom, but that just means that I have one experience under my belt and the next one will work out better.
After turning off the grill and letting the cake cool, I tried my hand at plating (a masterful art we have learned about on the Food Network). Again, better luck next time. All in all though, not a complete disaster.
