Hi, I'm Emily.

I’m on bed rest.  Given the current state of constant sleepiness that I’m in, I do not have a problem with that.

Last Tuesday I went to the doctor for (a severely, out-of-control, painful) sore throat.  It turned out to be strep.  I was home most of the week, knocked out from that.  Thursday, I made it into work in the morning, but was back home by the afternoon, sleeping and sleeping.  Friday, miraculously, I made it at work the entire day!  It may have been because there was only one doctor and so it was much slower.  I was exhausted by the time 5 o’clock hit, but proud of myself for making it through.

Saturday and Sunday, I literally didn’t step outside.  I was in my pjs the whole weekend, either in bed or laying on the couch.  It wasn’t that I felt sick, just that I was so tired, so so tired.

This morning, I was up and getting ready for work, fully functioning and able.  By the time I left the house, however, I could feel this sleepy weight crawling on me.  I could hardly keep my eyes open to drive to work.  When I got there, I grabbed some high-caffeine coffee and thought I’d just work the day away.  My first fainting spell came while I was working on dictation.  I was attaching letters to their corresponding charts when things just started going black and spinning.  I knew I was going down so I made a mad dash to the room with a couch in it and laid down.  After a few minutes, my vision and hearing returned and, although my forehead felt warm, I figured I could stand up and finish the dictation.

The next one hit when I was answering a phone call.  I calmly put the patient on hold, turned to my coworker and asked her to pick up the line because I needed to go lay down.  Things were already going black at this point, but one of them said, “Oh my gosh, you look like a ghost!”  Again, I made it to the couch before actually blacking out.

We called the doctor, got an appointment, and one of my coworkers drove me there seeing that I was a driving risk with the blackout spells.  After some blood work, the rapid culture turns out that I do not have mono (like we suspected), but I do have some kind of viral head congestion which is making me sluggish and dizzy.  They are submitting more blood work to determine my cell counts and see if I’m anemic.

I plan on going back to work tomorrow.  I hate missing work.  For today, I’m in bed.  I just woke up 15 minutes again from a 2 hour nap and I’m ready to go back down again.  Good night, world.

(To clear up any questions, confusions, or potential excitement from the would-be-grandparents, let the record be clear that I’m not pregnant.)

Addendum 6/11/10:  My blood results came back normal.  I should be back to feeling like myself by next Monday or Tuesday so says my doctor.  Hurray!  That was a vicious round of strep if you ask me.
