I had met Phoebe a few years ago at the gym and later, when she invited several friends over for a Sunday brunch, I got the best french toast recipe from her. (Swear, you should have the recipe too! I’ve made it so many times since.) When Phoebe contacted me to take family photos, I knew it was going to be fun. Especially because, despite the rainy forecast, she said, “Awesome, we’ll just get some rain boots!”
We went to a trail near the Coralville Dam and as we started out, Phoebe said, “Now, we’ve never had pictures taken so we don’t know what to expect.” I told her, “Perfect! I love when people come without expectations! I just want you guys to hang out like you normally would. If I want a specific pose, I’ll tell you exactly what to do. Mostly, just do your thing.”
And let me tell you, folks, that is when I get the best shots.
I think Phoebe looks like Princess Diana here. I love this moment as she tried to get some giggles out of a silly 3-year-old.

I cannot get enough of the Simon family. They were so relaxed and casual and wonderful. I left that shoot feeling such a deep sense of gratitude for being able to do what I do. I’ll leave you with possibly my favorite photo of the day.
