Their first date was on June 14, 2010. Their friends had been trying to set them up for quite a while and she says she was a tomboy, class clown, and risk-taker in high school and no boy was going to slow her down. She got asked on dates and never showed any interest. She says, “I was always getting teased about this guy named Trent, but I never really paid attention until my senior year.
“[One night after graduation] we were sitting on his front porch. There had been about 10 people there to start off with and they slowly dwindled until it was just me and him. He asked me if I would go on a date with him. I remember thinking he sounded nervous, but I gave him a confident, ‘Yes, when?'”
They decided on Monday night, June 14th, and, little did they know, June 14th would forever become a defining date in their lives. He proposed to Megan on June 14, 2013. (And they’re getting married June 14, 2014!)
He says the proposal was one of the hardest things to think of. “I had one idea after another, but I just couldn’t seem to settle on one. Finally, about a week before I asked her, I decided on a picnic. In the weeks leading up to the proposal, I kept telling her over and over that I just wasn’t ready to marry yet. School and work were just too much and I liked the dating life as it was.
“I felt bad lying like this, but she always wanted the proposal to be a surprise and in order to do that, I had to be sneaky. This was extra challenging because Megan is like a little ninja spy, desperate to know any secret.
“To start the proposal, I snuck into her room after she was asleep and put 5 roses with cards on her desk. The first card had instructions on when she was to read the other cards throughout the day. I wrote simple love notes and hoped that since it was our anniversary day, she would think it was just a romantic gesture.
“Later that day, I took off of work early and packed the picnic and got to her house before she was home. I was waiting for her with a bouquet of yellow roses and told her to get ready for a picnic. I drove her to a little spot in upper City Park and I think at this point she was half expecting something, but prior to this she was devastated that I wasn’t going to propose. It was her dream to get engaged the same day at our first date.
“I had told her to bring the cards with her. Of the last four I had written, I had her read the first word of each card. ‘Will…you…marry…me?’ She managed the first two words without crying and then I had to wait in suspense. Finally, I asked if she would say yes since she seemed to have forgotten. When she said yes, I became the happiest I ever have in my life.”
Megan’s hair was by Kailee Seward and I’m so excited to get to work with her again for Trent & Megan’s wedding!
