This is our first year living in a house that is accessible to trick-or-treaters. We previously lived in a locked condo building so Halloween was never a consideration. Kevin was going to be working late and I was going to be at the gym so we were unprepared with candy since we weren’t going to be at home.
When I got home from the gym, it was late–like 7 PM–and we didn’t have anything to eat so we decided to order in pizza. It was a great idea until we realized that trick-or-treating in Coralville went until 8 PM (not 7 like we had thought) and we’d have to turn on our porch light so the pizza guy could deliver our pizza.
The only candy in the house was a handful of Hershey’s mini candies that I have in my grandma’s pink depression glass bowl in the china cabinet. I have them on hand for bridal consults (though I pick out all the dark chocolates for myself…I’ll admit it).
So we weighed our options. I had showered by this point and was in my pajamas so I refused to answer the door. The pizza was supposed to arrive around 7:45 so we could wait to turn on the outside lights until 7:40 and then just hope we had enough candy for the few kids who would hit our house.
It was pitch black outside, but it felt like the second we turned on the light, the kids were like flies to light. We, thankfully, had enough candy in our little stash of non-Halloween candy to give out and I said that if we ran out, I could give out pieces of bread. (Kevin thought that was ridiculous.)
Our pizza arrived just as our candy was almost empty. We immediately shut off the porch light, grabbed our pizza, and hunkered down for a very low-key evening.
The best part? We got free breadsticks with our order. Just because. And technically the pizza was free too…because we’ve ordered from there before. 😉
Happy (day-after) Halloween!
