“I don’t remember a particular moment but I remember everything always feeling effortless and easy when were were together,” Jessica recalled. “I had never felt this way with anyone before. I felt like I could truly be myself with him.”They met at work and were coworkers for over a year before they started dating. “We had a customer who came in on a regular basis and would often try to set us up. Eventually it worked! However, we kept our relationship a secret for about five months.” They can’t agree on when or even what categorized as their first date so they have a variety of three separate events, all within the span of a week, that they debate about.
“Option A: Mitch invited me over to his apartment on a Sunday afternoon. I had a busy weekend so I arrived late and in sweats, not realizing that he thought we’d go grab some dinner. Instead, he made Triscuit nachos. I was nervous, but excited. We both knew we liked each other but weren’t sure if dating a co-worker was the right move.
“Option B: There was a Wednesday evening happy hour planned among co-workers, but the day of we found out that we were the only two who were able to go. Instead of going to the designated bar, we went to a different bar so no one else would unexpectedly show up. We spent the entire evening talking and laughing, so much that my cheeks hurt from smiling. Everything felt so effortless and easy. At the end of the night Mitch paid for our tab so I count that as our first date. I think it was this night that he officially asked me to go to dinner with him on Friday.
“Option C: We went to dinner at Blackstone that Friday evening. I honestly don’t remember this night as vividly as the first two, but Mitch considers this to be our first date.”
We met up this past weekend at one of my favorites place, the fossil gorge, for their engagement session. There were snowflakes falling that morning and the wind was blowing fast and furiously. I knew we’d have some protection in the gorge and that Jessica had also gotten her makeup done that morning (as well as them both having the day off of work and knowing the last of the fall colors were quickly heading out of town) so I texted her and we decided to go ahead with it. I love that they trusted me with this and, yes, it was cold, but they were great sports and we had a lot of fun!
“My fairytale is a little different than most and that’s okay! There wasn’t a proposal or even a ring. We had talked about getting married but never a timeline. We had been together for 8 years when I finally just threw out some dates and location options and we decided to get married. I was so excited to finally tell our parents that there was going to be a wedding!” They just celebrated nine years of being together and I’m so so so excited to celebrate their wedding next spring!
