They met in early 2022 at a bar on the University of Chicago’s campus called The Pub. “We talked with a mutual friend about playing tennis and then I told Spencer we should play and gave him my number,” Kerry said. A few days after that meeting, they met up again in Hyde Park to play tennis. “We just chatted and it felt really easy,” recalled Kerry. “I’m usually very cold, but even on a 50-degree day in March, I felt warm!”
“Kerry wore her Yankees hat and I knew this was going somewhere,” said Spencer. Ever since, they have been on the going, always trying new activities together, including trying croquet and joining the Chicago croquet club, “bringing the average age considerably down.”
Because of their mutual love of tennis and how big of a role it played in the beginning of their relationship, they asked what I thought about doing part of their engagement session on the tennis court. I was so excited and absolutely love how different the two parts of their session are! We ended with tennis, but I’m starting the blog with it because it truly showcases their fun personalities. We laughed so much together that evening!
Spencer remembered when he knew Kerry was the one: “Before Christmas, I was skiing and coming back, got stuck in the Southwest cancellations. I thought I was going to miss our planned Christmas together before Kerry went back to Iowa. I got on a flight eventually and talked to Kerry through the night. She picked me up in the morning and we had a wonderful day together doing Christmas things with my family. I knew we’d have a beautiful life together.”
He proposed a couple months later. “The week before the proposal, Kerry and I went to the ballet and my mom also went with her friend. She handed off my great-grandmother’s ring to me that I was going to give to Kerry. I wanted to propose somewhere that was a special place in Chicago because that’s where we’re going to make our life together and also somewhere that had a connection to an activity we like to do together.”
“Spencer had booked a skating slot at the Maggie Daley Ribbon downtown. When we got to the rink, he kept falling behind. Little did I know he was scoping out the perfect spot! Eventually, he told me he wanted to show me his new trick and got down on one knee on the ice.”
“I admire his big heart and the way he is always thinking about how to make the world better. He wants people to be connected and feel loved,” Kerry said.
Similarly, Spencer said about Kerry, “I admire her ability to make other people comfortable and her love for people.”
They are getting married this fall and it’s going to be a beautiful day, but, even more, they will make a wonderful team as they share life together.
