I‘ll admit, it wasn’t actually fossil hunting. I mean, we happened to go hiking near the fossil gorge, but the closet thing I found to a fossil was a decaying fish carcass. I was pretty excited about it given that I had just told Kevin that I was hoping to find a full dinosaur fossil. The fish carcass was close enough.

Kevin hadn’t told me what we were doing, just that I needed to be ready to leave in T-10 minutes. We had a wonderful hike and September has truly brought with it cooler temperatures. The breeze was almost chilly in the shade and it felt completely wonderful.

Birds were singing, trees were wavering between keeping their green leaves and letting them turn colors, and other hikers were out and about. It felt like life was balanced perfectly. It was a completely refreshing Sunday with my favorite man.

With no need for words, we simply were. And it’s so wonderful to simply be.

I had met Phoebe a few years ago at the gym and later, when she invited several friends over for a Sunday brunch, I got the best french toast recipe from her. (Swear, you should have the recipe too! I’ve made it so many times since.) When Phoebe contacted me to take family photos, I knew it was going to be fun. Especially because, despite the rainy forecast, she said, “Awesome, we’ll just get some rain boots!”

We went to a trail near the Coralville Dam and as we started out, Phoebe said, “Now, we’ve never had pictures taken so we don’t know what to expect.” I told her, “Perfect! I love when people come without expectations! I just want you guys to hang out like you normally would. If I want a specific pose, I’ll tell you exactly what to do. Mostly, just do your thing.”

And let me tell you, folks, that is when I get the best shots.

I think Phoebe looks like Princess Diana here. I love this moment as she tried to get some giggles out of a silly 3-year-old.

photocrati galleryI cannot get enough of the Simon family. They were so relaxed and casual and wonderful. I left that shoot feeling such a deep sense of gratitude for being able to do what I do. I’ll leave you with possibly my favorite photo of the day.
