Hi, I'm Emily.

  • We got bicycles! I’ve been talking about getting a bike for several years now, but was never willing to bite the bullet and actually invest in a good one. Also, I had visions of a pink bicycle was a basket and a bell. When it came to reality, I ended up with a fitness hybrid bike because, let’s be honest, if I’m going to be biking, I want to be getting a workout. So this time, Kevin won the argument with function over fashion. But I still named her Molly.
  • I sang again at the UI Service of Remembrance, but this year I had my BFF Sara help me out. I kind of thought that I’d be better this year, that I’d be able to hold it together since I’d participated before. Turns out, it doesn’t get easier. Yet I find myself continually blessed because, as I told Sara, it’s a most beautiful thing to witness a ballroom full of families tied together by a common thread. They all lost, yet here, they can all mourn together and celebrate life. I want to hug every one of them. Instead, I just cried along with them.
  • We had a random late-night family gathering last weekend involving s’mores and little brothers with fireworks. It was pretty awesome and the only time I got sad was when I looked around at my brothers and wished that my sisters could’ve been there to complete us.

  • The pool has become a refuge this summer. I know that all across the country the grass is prickly and the rain is rare and, in some places, there’s a ban in place to water your lawn because the water is so precious to keep for drinking and regular household needs. But it makes me sad when it’s this scratchy. I live in the Iowa desert.

  • Lastly, I wish I could claim the genius that this is, but I cannot. Just put your phone in a glass or bowl to amplify the volume! It works so great that even Kevin was impressed. I call this Music in a Glass.
