have an album on my Facebook page of behind the scenes photos. I’ve gotten so many questions about what I wear to weddings (and the heels! oh, the questions about heels!) and where I get my dresses that I’ve decided to start a short series on what I wear for wedding days.
First of all, I should preface that it’s important to dress for your brand. Imagine if my clients met me, hired me, did their engagement session with me, and then suddenly, at their wedding I show up in, say, a dressy tee and khaki pants or, worse, jeans. That’s not me at all! First of all, I actually hate jeans and prefer to never wear them. But also, because I am my brand and my brand is me, I need to be true to myself. I like to dress up. I like to be feminine. I like golds, pinks, corals. I like dresses and skirts. I like to wear heels. I like painting my nails. It would be shocking if I showed up at a wedding in casual clothing. I don’t want to surprise my clients unless it’s a good surprise!

Okay, so let’s talk about my dresses. I have figured out what I feel most comfortable in and what looks best. For my figure, it’s fit-and-flare, knee-length dresses or skirts. I find a lot of my dresses and skirts at Asos.com and, if I can’t find it online or in stores, I can usually coerce my mother (a seamstress) to custom-make one for me. Modcloth.com has recently started offering “longer length” dresses which provides another great source. A lot of the midi lengths are too long for my short frame (I’m 5’3″), but I can easily hem them to a perfect knee-length fit. That, at least, is much easier than trying to figure out how to keep a short dress from hiking up too high on a wedding day!!
Something to consider: pockets are your best friend on a wedding day!! It’s hard to find dresses and skirts with pockets, but if I can, it’s like winning the lottery.
Here’s some dresses I have my eye on right now:
To note, find a watch that will work with every outfit. For me, it was the Fossil Stella watch in gold. It’s fashionable and functional.
I also recommend keeping jewelry to a minimum. I don’t wear necklaces on wedding days because I am moving around too much and have too many other things around my neck (my Shootsac, ExpoDisc, and possibly a camera strap). I also keep my earrings pretty minimal because I’m taking said straps off my shoulders a lot and it would be horrible to rip out an earring that got stuck on a strap. I usually wear a cocktail ring just to add some fun, but other than that, the watch and a pair of stud earrings are really my only accessories.
I’ve shown a pair of Tieks flats on the board above, but I’ll be dedicating an entire part of the series to shoes because I just know you’re already thinking, “She said she likes to wear heels but is showing a pair of flats.” Clarification coming up.
In recap, here are some of my favorite stores for knee-length (or midi) dresses and skirts:
