They met through a very chance phone call. Megan was with her friend, Amber, who was on the phone and needed to stop and tie her shoe laces. (“She’s clumsy and she knows it.”) Amber pushed her phone to Megan who chatted briefly with Nate, who was on the other end of the line. “Nate asked her for my number and the next day while I was at work, I got a text from him. From that moment, we were texting and talking on the phone pretty much daily.”
They’ve been through a lot together. “Weddings, funerals, friends’ babies being born; all sorts of things good and bad,” Nate said. “After years of going through all of these things, I realized there was no one else I wanted to be there for those events with. Once I realized I wanted to propose, I told my mom at Christmas. Months later, I talked to Megan’s best friend (also named Megan) and she helped me narrow down the type of ring Megan would like. I ordered it and hoped it would be ready for our trip to Tennessee at the end of June. Due to shipping issues, it wasn’t ready until after we got back. I then reached out to Megan’s friend Erin and she helped me come up with a second plan.
“We decided to throw an end-of-summer party (that would really be an engagement party) at the end of August. The day of, we set everything up and before people arrived, in front of my mom, brothers, and our friend Erin, I asked Megan to marry me.”
Megan said hosting a get together is not out of the ordinary for them so she didn’t think much of it. “I can’t say that there weren’t a few moments that I was very suspicious–and I even mentioned to a couple of our friends that I thought he was going to propose at the party–but then didn’t think he would do it in any sort of group setting, so I told myself he probably wasn’t going to.
“The day of the party we were getting things together about a half hour before people were supposed to start arriving and he started playing one of our songs and asked me to dance with him. As soon as I realized what song was playing, I knew…and I lost it! His mom, brothers, and one of our best friends were there to help him capture some photos and, from there, our other guests started trickling in and we had a great night surrounded by so many of our favorite people! It was the best way to start our celebration!”
That celebration continued this past weekend as their families and friends joined them at the Hyatt Regency in Coralville for their beautiful wedding. It was a perfect May day, sunny and warm, but not heating up into the 90s as originally predicted. With everything on site, they were able to get ready in hotel suites and then step outside for photos.
Their ceremony was held outdoors on the patio overlooking the wetland park and then guests were treated to a delicious assortment of hors d’oeuvres and drinks during cocktail hour before heading inside to the ballroom for the main party. Megan had said beforehand that what she was looking forward to most was “having all of our most important people in our lives all in one space to celebrate our love. People who have molded us as individuals and as a couple. (And, of course, to finally become Mrs. Jacobs!)” Looking around that day was a wonderful testament to how those people showed up for them.

Megan’s mom passed away in 2021 and all of her grandparents have also passed away. She had their photos on charms on her bouquet along with a piece from her mom’s wedding gown.
Both of Nate’s grandfather’s have passed away, one of whom they lost just two weeks before Christmas after a long battle with leukemia. Their wedding date would’ve been his birthday, which he had been so excited about sharing. Nate tucked his bolo tie into his suit coat to keep him near.
Do not be fooled by this cute face. This guy was a runner, lol. That firm mom-grip was the only thing keeping him there.
I mentioned already that Megan used the lace from her mom’s veil to make her own, but as we were taking photos outside, Megan also spotted a bald eagle flying overhead, a bird that has special meaning to family of her mom.
