They’ve been together for almost 10 years, their kids growing up as siblings. They met in 2006 when Sara May’s son was in Eddie’s camp. “We had a school-related lunch in August and then I thought it would turn into something more,” Sara May said. “But he chickened out. Then a friend convinced me I need to up my flirting game and he finally asked me out on a real date.”

Many of their best memories together include their kids. Sara May recalled the time they first introduced their kids to each other (her son then in 2nd grade and his daughter in 4th grade). “We took them to a puppet show at the Old Capitol and later went sledding. Honestly, we love to get time to hang out with the kids, like playing board games or going to super-hero movies. It’s just great when we all four get to eat dinner together!”

Eddie said he knew he loved Sara May for a long time, but he didn’t know if he wanted to get married. “When I first knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her was way before asking her to marry me.” He proposed last August.

“After hitting his one year of sobriety last fall, Eddie proposed after getting home from an Iowa football game. I was in bed watching TV and he got down on a knee in our bedroom. I screamed something at him about why was he doing this while I was in my pajamas.”

“After the game, as I was walking to my parents’ home where my car was parked, I got this sudden feeling of joy,” Eddie recalled. “It started as I was leaving the stadium, saying my goodbyes to fellow Hawk fans. I was thinking about why I was feeling this good. Many reasons came to mind. And every single reason could directly linked to Sara as the cause. It felt very spiritual and I was grateful to know what I was experiencing. I made a decision to propose that night, knowing full well she would be in her PJs all ready for bed. I got home, walked upstairs. She was in the projected location as well as attire. I got down on one knee and asked if she would marry me. The next 30 seconds are kinda a blur, but I do remember her saying, ‘What? What are you doing?’ I am not sure if the ‘yes’ was before, but it was definitely after.”

They are planning their fall wedding, which will be almost 10 years exactly to the anniversary of their first date, and I already know it’s going to be such a fun day of celebration.
