Hi, I'm Emily.

They met through a chance phone call thanks to a mutual friend who needed to stop and tie her shoe. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?

“I was in Milwaukee with a friend attending Summerfest,” Nate said. “We had gotten back to the hotel after the last show of the night and my friend, Amber, called me. I answered the phone and we talked for a bit. She then had to tie her shoe and passed the phone to Megan, who was with her.”

“After chatting on the phone for a bit,” Megan said. “Nate asked Amber for my number and the next day while I was at work, I got a text from him and from then on, we were texting and talking on the phone pretty much daily. From the beginning, he always had me laughing. I remember being very nervous to meet him in person and I couldn’t figure out why. But when we met, the nerves all went away and it felt like we had been friends for a long time and it just felt so natural.”

I always ask my couples when they knew the other was their person. “I can’t exactly pinpoint a moment that I knew,” Megan replied. “There was just this feeling of knowing he was the one I wanted to share all of my best and worst moments with. Because we were so young when we met, we have both done a lot of growing and figuring out not only who we are as a couple, but also who we are as individuals. Through our different seasons of the last 11 years, the one thing that has never changed is that he is my very best friend. The one thing I have always known is that I wanted my husband to truly be my person.”

Nate agreed that there wasn’t a moment. “We have been through a lot together. Weddings, funerals, friends’ babies being born, all sorts of things; good and bad. After years of going through all of these things, I realized there was no one else I wanted to be there for those events with.”

Nate filled me in on the proposal. “Once I realized I wanted to eventually propose, I told my mom at Christmas. Months later, I talked to Megan’s best friend (also named Megan) and she helped me narrow down the type of ring Megan would like. I ordered it and hoped it would be ready for our trip to Tennessee at the end of June. Due to shipping issues, it wasn’t ready until after we got back. I then reached out to Megan’s friend Erin and she helped me come up with a second plan.

“We decided to throw an end-of-summer party (that would really be an engagement party) at the end of August. The day of, we set everything up and before people arrived, in front of my mom, brothers, and our friend Erin, I asked Megan to marry me.”

Megan said hosting a get together is not out of the ordinary for them so she didn’t think much of it. “I can’t say that there weren’t a few moments that I was very suspicious–and I even mentioned to a couple of our friends that I thought he was going to propose at the party–but then didn’t think he would do it in any sort of group setting, so I told myself he probably wasn’t going to.

“The day of the party we were getting things together about a half hour before people were supposed to start arriving and he started playing one of our songs and asked me to dance with him. As soon as I realized what song was playing, I knew…and I lost it! His mom, brothers, and one of our best friends were there to help him capture some photos and, from there, our other guests started trickling in and we had a great night surrounded by so many of our favorite people! It was the best way to start our celebration!”
